Indications:
Blood gas analysis will consist of measuring values for pH, pCO2, pO2, NA, K, Ca++, Hb, HbCO, HbMet, O2Hb as ordered by the physician. These values will be used in the assessment of ventilatory support, acid base balance, oxygenations and the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. In addition, blood gas analysis may be used to quantitate the patient's response to therapeutic intervention or the severity (or progression) of a documented disease process.

Equipment:

a. Arterial blood gas kit which includes the following:
1. (1) 3cc plastic syringe pre-heparinized with 75 units of lyphosized lithium heparin.
2. (1) 23 gauge X 1 needle with protector device
3. (1) Provent filter cap
4. (2) alcohol prep pads
5. (1) 4X4 gauze sponge
6. (1) patient label
7. (1) transport bag
b. Gloves
c. Other personal protective equipment (PPE) as indicated.
